In South Africa we also visited the central mountains: the Drakensburg. Despite the strong September winds (gusting 50 to 60 mph) we enjoyed a number of walks in the area.
The most dramatic was a walk to the top of the “Amphitheatre” – a 1km high sheer drop, in the shape of a huge horseshoe. We took a guide, thankfully, and began the several hours of trek over stones and slippery / angled rock, of course with no safety rails!
Towards the top there were 2 “metal ladders” (like rope ladders) which were 100ft high in total and shaking around in the wind. I wasn’t sure that I could make it up them, but Sue did, so I had no choice!
